About this bird:
Ranging throughout the northern and eastern mainland of Australia and Tasmania, the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is one noisy and conspicuous bird, both at rest and in flight. Found in a variety of timbered habitats and common around urban environments, the birds stay in the same area all year round and have been known to live up to 80+ years of age when in captivity. A highly social bird, they spend a lot of time in flocks, foraging on the ground or roosting together in trees. Known for its raucous calls that echo through the forest, this intelligent bird is a masterful communicator, utilizing an extensive repertoire of squawks, screeches and whistles to communicate with its flock. Beyond its vocal prowess, these Cockatoos display remarkable intelligence and problem-solving abilities, often observed using tools to extract food or solve puzzles. Despite the challenges posed to wildlife by urbanization, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos have shown resilience and resourcefulness in thriving amidst human development. Their ability to coexist with humans in urban settings underscores their adaptability and highlights the importance of conservation efforts to protect their populations and preserve their natural behaviours in both urban and wild habitats. Conservation Status: Least Concern.
