I couldn’t pass up painting the stunning Eastern Rosella with its amazing array of colours and textures! The most fun was had capturing its intricate feather patterns with some of my signature inky textures, which is beautifully balanced by the rich, vibrant watercolours. With personality for days, I wanted to depict the Eastern Rosella to have an air of (justified) cheeky arrogance, as they truly seem to 'know' how beautiful they are!
This artwork has been hand painted with professional-grade watercolour paint and detailed with a traditional nib and highly concentrated ink on 300gsm 100% cotton watercolour paper. See more details below.
About this bird:
The Eastern Rosella is one of the iconic sights of Australia, native to the eastern states of the continent and Tasmania. Found in open woods, grass, farmland and bushland, they are also often found in urban areas. Despite the bold colouration, their plumage is patterned so that it creates an extremely effective camouflage. When they are feeding on the ground or perched among the foliage they can be very difficult to see which also assists in avoiding detection by potential predators. These incredibly playful and unique birds mate for life. The female chooses and prepares the nesting site, usually a hollow in a eucalypt tree, where she incubates the eggs while the male regularly feeds her. They unfortunately now have to compete with introduced species for suitable nest hollows and are often killed by domestic pets and strays. The Eastern Rosella is on the IUCN’s list as a non-threatened breed of ‘Least Concern’.
