So many of Australia’s mammals are nocturnal, so often when we see them – they are asleep and often in the most hilarious and bizarre positions with their pudgy hands and feet sprawled out in every direction! It’s because of this that Shannon’s imagination was stirred and the adorable serenity of ‘Wuggles’ the wombat in a deep sleep was ‘born’!

Artwork Specifications:
‘Wuddle’ was created using a traditional nib dip pen and ink, along with professional-grade watercolours executed on 425gsm 100% cotton rag watercolour paper. This original artwork includes the ‘Shannon Dwyer Original’ embossment and hand-penned signature validating it as an original artwork of Shannon Dwyer.

Wombat Fun Facts:

The common wombat is endemic to Australia, found in a variety of habitats across the continent. They are marsupials (animals whose babies develop in a special pouch outside of the mother’s body) although, the opening of its pouch faces backwards to prevent it filling with dirt when digging. Excellent burrowers, they dig extensive tunnel systems using their powerful claws. When threatened, they retreat head-first into their burrows, using their incredibly thick hindquarters to act as a barrier (and weapon) against predators (fox/dingo sculls have been found crushed near burrows). They are nocturnal, and like the platypus, wombats have bio-fluorescent fur and glow in the dark under UV light, though scientists don’t yet know why! Another quirk still unknown to science and that’s unique to wombats is that they are the only animals in the world to produce cube-shaped poop! Weird! Although common wombat populations are stable, they are often hunted by farmers to prevent the damage that their burrows cause to agricultural fields.  Other threats are loss of habitat, droughts, wildfires and threats from dingo packs/feral dogs and vehicle collisions. Conservation Status: Least Concern.

This piece will be delivered in a large reinforced postage tube, rolled securely in (and protected by) acid-free tissue paper.

Framing tips and suggestions:
This piece is best ‘float-mounted’ and framed behind glass.
‘Float-mounting’ allows the paper to have a bit of ‘freedom’ which watercolour paper often needs as its rarely perfectly ‘flat’. By ‘mounting’ the artwork, it showcases the raw edges of the watercolour paper and subtle wave of the paper to enhance the the fact that its an original artwork with delicious ‘imperfections’.
