Shannon had the ‘Bourkie’ on her to do for a while, drawn to its stunning pastel colouring, big dark eyes and ‘tranquil’ nature. Whilst painting this piece, Shannon thoroughly enjoyed capturing all the little details in its soft, textured plumage! So pretty!

Description

Fun Facts included on the Certificate of Authenticity:

The Bourke’s Parrot, also known as a Pink-bellied Parrot, is primarily found in the arid and semi-arid regions of central and southeastern Australia. They inhabit scrublands, woodlands and open plains, favouring areas with Mulga trees. Their diet mainly consists of seeds, as well as occasional fruits and berries. Like many species adapted to arid environments, Bourke’s Parrots have evolved several physiological and behavioural adaptations to conserve water, such as; nocturnal drinking, avoiding the heat of the day and water loss through evaporation, as well as the ability to extract moisture from their food – allowing them to go for long periods without water. Unlike most parrots (known to be loud and raucous), Bourke’s Parrots are relatively quiet with soft, melodious vocalizations. Active during early morning and late afternoon, the hottest parts of the day are spent resting in the shade where their soft, patterned plumage is an effective camouflage against the sandy, rocky landscapes they inhabit. In breeding season, they form monogamous pairs, nesting in tree hollows, cliffs or even abandoned burrows. Unfortunately, predation by introduced species such as cats and foxes is a serious issue, as well as habitat loss/degradation due to agriculture and urbanization. In eastern Australia, the Bourke’s Parrot has been adversely affected by overstocking and rabbit plagues (both of which remove understorey plants), however, some areas of WA have seen population growth since grazing was scaled down – allowing vegetation to regenerate. Conservation Status: Least Concern.

Framing tips and suggestions:
This piece is best ‘float-mounted’ and framed behind glass.
‘Float-mounting’ allows the paper to have a bit of ‘freedom’ which watercolour paper often needs as its rarely perfectly ‘flat’. By ‘mounting’ the artwork, it showcases the raw edges of the watercolour paper and subtle wave of the paper to enhance the the fact that its an original artwork with delicious ‘imperfections’.
