Description

Fun Facts included on the Certificate of Authenticity:

The Eastern Spinebill honeyeater is endemic to eastern Australia, ranging from QLD through NSW, Victoria and into southeastern South Australia, inhabiting shrubs in open eucalypt forests, as well as shrubland, heathland and well-vegetated suburban gardens. Despite its small size, the Eastern Spinebill is an agile flier, capable of swift and precise manoeuvers, darting between branches and navigating dense vegetation with ease. With a specially adapted, long slender bill it is able to reach deep into flowers to access the sweet nectar and, whilst most Australian honeyeaters feed from a perched position, the Eastern Spinebill has a remarkable hovering ability, enabling it to remain stationary in front of flowers while it drinks! Nectar is obtained from a wide array of flowers, including grevilleas, but its beak is particularly well-suited to extracting nectar from tubular flowers. Thanks to its unique adaptation of feeding on nectar, Eastern Spinebills inadvertently play a vital role in pollination by transferring pollen from one flower to another, making them important contributors to the ecosystem’s health and the reproductive success of flowering plants. In fact, some plants appear to have evolved specially to be pollinated by them. During the breeding season, males establish and defend territories, often engaging in vocal displays and chasing off intruders to protect their nesting sites. Only the female builds the nest and incubates the eggs but both parents feed the young when they hatch. Conservation status: Least Concern.

Framing tips and suggestions:
This piece is best ‘float-mounted’ and framed behind glass.
‘Float-mounting’ allows the paper to have a bit of ‘freedom’ which watercolour paper often needs as its rarely perfectly ‘flat’. By ‘mounting’ the artwork, it showcases the raw edges of the watercolour paper and subtle wave of the paper to enhance the the fact that its an original artwork with delicious ‘imperfections’.
