Original watercolour and ink artwork, ‘Thor’, the Thorny Devil.

Shannon’s favourite subject to paint and draw are reptiles and the thorny Devil is an absolute GOLD mine for yummy textures, patterns and odd-ball shapes. Shannon found this an absolute delight to paint – happiness in art form.

Before starting an artwork Shannon researches her subject thoroughly to intimately know its habits, movements, personality and colouring to ensure she can capture it all in her artwork.
One of the bonuses of this research for her art collectors is that her research is then also combined into a summarised paragraph which becomes part of the Certificate of Authenticity.

Thorny Devil fun-facts included on the Certificate of Authenticity: With a scientific name Moloch horridus that essentially means: a demon god (who demanded the sacrifice of children) and ‘horrible or causing horror’… I feel this amazingly evolved reptile, with its funny, jerky, ‘wind-up toy’ walk, is nothing like its namesake! Thorny Devils live in the arid inland deserts of Australia which average less than 25cm of rain a year and make the most of any available moisture. It has evolved a network of grooves in its densely-packed spikes, each no bigger than rose thorns, which are hygroscopic (moisure-attracting) to draw water from the dew that condenses on its body. It’s then drawn by capillary action directly to its mouth, allowing the Thorny Devil to drink water from, literally, all over its body. It is also thought the spikes deter potential predators… and, if that doesn’t work, they deceive them with the spiny ‘false head’ on the back of their neck. Thorny Devils are what’s known as obligate myrmecophages: they eat only ants. They use their sticky tongues to feast on anywhere from 600 to 2500 ants per meal! They have a bimodal seasonal pattern due to their intolerance of extreme temperatures. They’re virtually inactive during the hottest (Jan/Feb) and the coldest (Jun/Jul) months, when they take refuge in underground burrows. Autumn (Mar – May), as well as late winter/early summer (Aug – Dec) is when they’re most active, during which they mate and lay eggs. Further to this, weather determines their colour. When warm, they’re pale yellow/red, but change rapidly to dark colors in cold weather or if alarmed. Conservation Status: Least Concern.

Framing tips and suggestions:
This piece is best ‘float-mounted’ and framed behind glass.
‘Float-mounting’ allows the paper to have a bit of ‘freedom’ which watercolour paper often needs as its rarely perfectly ‘flat’. By ‘mounting’ the artwork, it showcases the ruffled edges of the watercolour paper and subtle wave of the paper to enhance the the fact that its an original artwork with delicious imperfections.
