Original watercolour and ink artwork, ‘Boo’, the Boobook Owl.

Before starting an artwork Shannon researches her subject thoroughly to intimately know its habits, movements, personality and colouring to ensure she can capture it all in her artwork.
One of the bonuses of this research for her art collectors is that her research is then also combined into a summarised paragraph which becomes part of the Certificate of Authenticity.

Shannon thoroughly enjoyed capturing this adorable little owl – what a looker! Its piercing gaze also seemed to resonate with Shannon as one of the many overwhelming emotions felt during Sydney’s 2021 Covid-19 lockdown!

Boobook Owl fun-facts included on the Certificate of Authenticity: The Southern Boobook, also known as the ‘Mopoke’, is the smallest and most common owl in Australia, found throughout the mainland and Tasmania and on some coastal islands. Although widespread, it’s often overlooked because of its nocturnal habits. If the species is seen during the day, it is usually roosting among dense foliage, being scolded by various small birds. Southern Boobooks are seen in a variety of habitats from dense forest to open desert, including woodlands, rural, heath and urban habitats. It feeds on insects, small mammals and small birds at roost while most prey is detected at night by listening and watching from a tall perch. Once detected, flying prey, such as moths and small bats, are seized in mid-air, while ground-dwelling prey animals are pounced upon. One of the most common sounds of the Australian bush at night, and the most well-known aspect of the Southern Boobook, is its characteristic call; ‘boobook’ or ‘morepork’, sometimes repeated incessantly, occasionally for hours on end. They also have a special call only for their mate. The male will call with a ‘pot-pot-por’ to his chosen one and sadly, if a boobook has not mated during breeding season, the exasperated, harsh, unsteady call of an un-coupled male boobook, trying desperately to find a mate, can be angonising. Conservation Status: Secure.

Framing tips and suggestions:
This piece is best ‘float-mounted’ and framed behind glass.
‘Float-mounting’ allows the paper to have a bit of ‘freedom’ which watercolour paper often needs as its rarely perfectly ‘flat’. By ‘mounting’ the artwork, it showcases the ruffled edges of the watercolour paper and subtle wave of the paper to enhance the the fact that its an original artwork with delicious imperfections.
