Original watercolour and ink artwork, ‘Dame’, the Australasian Darter.

With such alluring, shimmery feathers and a glorious ‘sunning pose’ – I was absolutely enticed to capture this beauty.

Australasian Darter fun facts included on the Cetificate of Authenticity: The Australasian Darter is widely distributed across Australia, though not in the Great Sandy or Great Victoria Deserts, Nullarbor Plain and (less common) Tasmania. Residing in wetlands and sheltered coastal waters, mainly in the Tropics/Subtropics, it prefers smooth, open waters for feeding, usually found near fallen tree trunks or logs/stumps, and borders of inland water sources with abundant vegetation for resting and drying its wings. Darters forage by diving to depths of about 60cm, impaling fish with its sharp, spear-like beak. Their plumage saturates when they dive, soaking into the spaces between the feathers, allowing the bird to reduce its natural buoyancy and swim underwater. They are often resting, holding their wings out in the typical ‘drying’ posture, to allow the water to drain from their sodden feathers as they need to dry out after every diving session. Because of its long and slender neck, which is often the only thing you can see when they are swimming, the Darter is sometimes called the snakebird. Usually a solitary bird, they form pairs only while breeding. Both sexes complete the nest, incubate the eggs and raise the young. When it’s not breeding season, they can move long distances of nearly 2,000 km or more. Conservation Status: Least Concern.

Framing tips and suggestions:
This piece is best ‘float-mounted’ and framed behind glass.
‘Float-mounting’ allows the paper to have a bit of ‘freedom’ which watercolour paper often needs as its rarely perfectly ‘flat’. By ‘mounting’ the artwork, it showcases the ruffled edges of the watercolour paper and subtle wave of the paper to enhance the the fact that its an original artwork with delicious imperfections.
