Original watercolour and ink artwork, ‘Gossip Girls’, the Apostlebirds.*

Shannon found the intricacies of the feathering on these gorgeous (if a little grumpy-looking) apostlebirds so delicious that she simply had to paint them! Well…that, and because, like Shannon, they’re famous for a chatty-chatty-chat-chat.

Before starting an artwork Shannon researches her subject thoroughly to intimately know its habits, movements, personality and colouring to ensure she can capture it all in her artwork.
One of the bonuses of this research for her art collectors is that her research is then also combined into a summarised paragraph which becomes part of the Certificate of Authenticity.

Apostlebird fun-facts included on the Certificate of Authenticity: The Apostlebird, also known as the grey jumper or lousy jack, is a quick-moving, grey bird that is native to Australian woodlands, eating insects and seeds at, or near, ground level. Found in inland eastern Australia from lower Cape York Peninsula, QLD to northern VIC, and from Naracoorte to Mount Lofty Ranges, SA, with an isolated population in the NT. Apostlebirds are usually seen in social groups with 6 – 20 other birds, doing everything together, giving a wide range of calls and telling each other about it very loudly and often! Early settlers believed that these groups always comprised 12 birds, and likened these to the apostles of Jesus Christ – hence the name ‘Apostlebirds’. Belonging to the group of birds known as ‘mud-nesters’, all members assist with nest building, as well as feeding of nestlings, while only the adults usually incubate the eggs. Often a newly paired male and female don’t have the help required to birth new offspring, so they go on the hunt for other birds’ offspring and kidnap them, to bolster their ranks. Apostlebirds nestlings remain with their parents for an incredible 200 days (to put that in perspective, a pigeon chick typically leaves the nest after about 30 days) – talk about needy! Apostlebirds conservation status is: Least Concern.
