Tawny Frogmouths are Shannon’s absolute FAVOURITE bird. With stunning mottled feathers and its absolutely GLORIOUS ‘what the hell do you want face’, this bird is unrivalled by any other, in her eyes. Shannon enjoyed playing on canvas for the first time and, of course, thoroughly enjoyed capturing that Tawny character, colourings and patterns.

‘Diva’ was created with watercolours, acrylic and ink, detailed with a traditional nib, on Premium, archival quality 380gsm acid-free 100% unbleached cotton duck canvas. This original artwork is signed with Shannon Dwyer’s hand-penned signature, validating it as an original artwork of Shannon Dwyer Artist.

Found throughout Australia and Tasmania, Tawny Frogmouths mate for life, with a breeding pair often staying in the same territory for more than 10 years! Looking like a shocked, electrocuted fuzz-ball, in its juvenile years this remarkable bird has evolved to be the ultimate master of disguise – easily being confused with a tree branch thanks to its oh-so soft, bark-coloured feathers. It’s highly likely most Australians have walked under a tree that a tawny frogmouth was roosting in and have never known it was there! After sleeping all day, at dusk, they shake their disguise and begin their hunt – utilising their huge, vibrant yellow eyes for nocturnal hunting. The bulk of the Tawny Frogmouth’s diet is made up of nocturnal insects, worms, slugs and snails. Small mammals, reptiles, frogs and birds are also eaten. Most food is obtained by pouncing to the ground from a tree or other elevated perch. Habitat loss is the most serious threat to the species, whether through land clearing, forestry or intensive bushfires. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list considers the Tawny Frogmouth to be a ‘least concern’ species.

Framing tips / suggestions:
This canvas has been stretched over a wooden frame, however, it would look ‘sharper’ if it was finished with a shadow box frame around the exterior of the canvas. It will not only protect the edges of the painting but can give the painting a more sophisticated finish – although, the edges of this canvas have been painted black which gives it another ‘dimension’/finish.

It’s a personal choice.
